Automation of the inventory by Drone

See how Volvo Trucks was able to cut its inventory time by 6, from 115 seconds per cell with manual inventory to 26 seconds with the EyeSee solution.

The customer

With more than 54,000 vehicles sold in 2019, Renault Trucks, a subsidiary of Volvo Trucks, is one of the world’s leading truck manufacturers. From design to production and marketing, it has more than 10,000 employees.

As an industrial player, Renault Trucks is present throughout the supply chain.

The Pont et Essieux factory ensures that all the components required for production are present and then makes them available to the assembly line.

Project synopsis

At the Pont Essieux factory in Saint Priest, the storage capacity is 4500 cells.

Before 2016, the inventories were done by the employees of the plant manually with binoculars. It is important to specify that the inventories are long and painful tasks for the employees (solicitation of the cervicals and accumulate on the human acuity). Volvo Trucks wanted to modernize its inventory process with a more efficient and practical solution. This is how the project for a drone inventory solution emerged

Goals

Increase the reliability of the stock

Decrease the risk of interruptions to ensure continuity of production activities

Dedicate staff time to other, higher value-added tasks

" With our partner, we studied the positioning and the particularities of our storage racks in order to establish a precise flight plan and to program it on a tablet. The drone can thus operate on several hundred locations. It guarantees the reliability of the stock and avoids production stoppages. "

The results

The plant reduced its inventory time by 6, going from 115 seconds per bin with the manual inventory to 26 seconds with the EyeSee solution.

To inventory the whole stock, i.e. 4500 trays in 1 month, 143 man-hours were necessary (i.e. 1 full time person). Now, thanks to EyeSee, the factory inventories its entire stock in 33 hours.

The time saved has allowed the staff to focus on other tasks with higher added value: identifying the causes of inventory errors and consequently implementing the appropriate corrective actions.
